In late January 2025, Ireland braced for Storm Éowyn, an unprecedented extratropical cyclone that triggered a "danger to life" red warning for County Clare. The storm, which made landfall in the early hours, had a substantial impact on the animal sanctuary run by our dear friend John Roberts and his wife Rhona. A second, less severe storm hit the area shortly after. All power was lost, a situation expected to last until February 4th. With no candles or batteries available and food in the freezers rapidly defrosting, the sanctuary faced significant challenges. Adding to their woes, they had no insurance, as no Irish insurer, even specialist farm insurers, would cover them, and their builder, essential for repairs, is currently struck down with ill health. The sanctuary's water supply was critically low with the waterworks down and at least 20 drinking bowls were needed daily for the cats alone, in addition to that required for the ducks and chickens. The staff resorted to emptying the freezers and using the melting ice to provide water for the animals.
At the time of writing, power and water have thankfully been restored. The donkeys have had to be moved on to another sanctuary as their barn and hay shed were totally destroyed, as was a VERY substantial polytunnel. With your help, essential repairs will be made and once the barn is rebuilt the donkeys will return to rejoin all the other animals at the sanctuary, who thankfully have survived the storm but are desperately relying on kind donations to keep their safe home running effectively.
An Cat Dubh is a no-kill sanctuary located between Ennis and Milltown Malby in Co. Clare, Ireland. There is no government funding, hence a total reliance on donations.
An Cat Dubh exists to promote kindness, care and understanding of cats and other animals, giving sanctuary and lifelong care to those cats requiring special attention due to age or infirmity. A ‘Trap, Neuter & Return/Release (TNR)’ program is also in place for feral (wild) cats. An Cat Dubh also re-homes cats to assessed ‘forever’ homes.
