'Hicks was a hit in the UK before he was known in the States.  Like Hendrix, the influences he picked up there turned him round in America.

'One UK stand-up in particular was a major influence on Bill Hicks' style.  Rob Newman is the comic about whom the phrase 'comedy is the new rock 'n' roll' is first written.  When Hicks first performs in London in 1990, he is wearing a herring-bone jacket, a stripy pastel shirt, and has rectangular, metal glasses. He looks like a fifty-year old college principal.   Same time, Rob Newman comes onstage to flashing lights, cracked-oil and pumping punk-rock music, has shoulder-length black hair, dresses all in black, wears a natty frock coat…All things which led Bill Hicks rapidly to hang up the herring-bone and totally change his whole style and look.

'Hicks asks to open for Newman on tour. Sadly, the two stand-ups never met. Newman, the younger man, turned down Hicks’ request to support him.
