SUMMER FREAK-OUT

Featuring THE FALLEN LEAVES

Plus Special Guests PAUL GROOVY & THE POP ART EXPERIENCE + THE GARY 7 + ACCORDING TO BRIAN + THE TARGETS

Their manifesto says “No Jeans. No T-Shirts. No Cover Versions” It also tells you that all their recorded material is performed live, with minimal overdubs added and that everything is about the song, the sound and the performance. So with that information we are left asking ourselves, “well, what do they actually sound like?” That is of course if we aren’t already familiar with THE FALLEN LEAVES…which naturally, we are as they last performed on the Wedge stage back in 2017 when a recently dear, departed friend of the Pompey music scene Jim Cruttenden organised a ‘Rock Against Racism’ event at the venue. This band of smartly dressed gentlemen reckon if you can imagine a cross between The Who and The Ramones then you’re kind of getting closer. We like their Punk/Mod/Garage/Beat description, their live show truly living up to this, which has made them a favourite among the Pompey garage rock fraternity. The Fallen Leaves have played in the city a number of times since 2017, proving their popularity here, so it’s well-advised to take possession of those sought-after tickets while they are still available.

Pompey phenomenon PAUL GROOVY & THE POP ART EXPERIENCE are back, armed with brand new recorded material which slots into their ever changing set of garage pop punk tunes. The Groovies (as they’re fondly referred to) have been around since the early 80s when they soon transformed into the Nuggets-influenced psych’n’roll familiarity that inhabits garage rock fraternities around the city. Their latest creation has veered away from the safety of garage rock and pop though, and moves into a slightly different direction. Soon to be released as their latest single, it is a small and fun departure from the usual pop grooves which will no doubt be in abundance as ever.

SUMMER FREAK-OUT means not just a couple of bands. Oh no…it means FIVE. And keeping the balance in the middle of it all will be THE GARY 7, using the event to launch the CD version of their album “Three of our Agents are Missing”. When asked to give some biography details the band told us “all our information is top secret”. Whether we will get access to their confidential files on the night is a mystery and they will probably remain classified until thereafter. We can however, in true tabloid fashion reveal that this 4-piece instrumental garage/spy-fi surf supergroup features members of Portsmouth’s very own Emptifish. At the time of going to press we can verify that we have been given clearance to circulate this restricted information.

Next up on the bill are yet more familiar faces, not seen on the wedge stages for some time now, but rest assured, they are a welcome return. ACCORDING TO BRIAN were formed when a pair of beetles (they may have been of the silver species) bumped into an earwig and decided to form a band. Hatched in the late 60s, early 70s, it’s all dirty riffs and bumper beats, with lots of singing on top. We think they will fit the bill perfectly with their splendid promise of a rip-roaring mod/garage stomp fest!

Be sure to arrive early for this event (doors are at 5.00pm), as first up “keeping the flame alive” with some pure Rock and Roll are THE TARGETS. This 3-piece band of youngsters specialise in their high energy recreations of of Garage Rock from the 60s and Punk from the 70s, but promise to add a new modern and exciting flare to their energetic set, that will no doubt kick off the evening perfectly.
